Pence had four hits and drove in six runs including a 3-run bottom-of-the-first inning home run to set the Giants on their way to a 6-0 nothing lead.
Giants starting pitcher, Ryan Vogelsong, for the second straight game, had trouble getting out of the fifth inning, and by innings-end, the Rockies had scored five runs and sent Vogelsong to the showers.
With hopes of stabilizing the now perilous performance by the pitching staff, Bruce Bochy used six pitchers in relief; none of which were effective. After Michael Cuddyer’s second home run of the game in the ninth inning, the Giants found themselves on the losing end of a 9-8 score.
“It’s a character-builder for us. Being down six runs early, it would have been easy to pack it in, we didn’t do that,” Cuddyer said.
Sergio Romo took the loss for the Giants and Wilton Lopez got the win for the Rockies.
Final game of the three-game set is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at 12:45p.m.
