Giants talk Alcatraz

On Friday, March 1, Giants players Pablo Sandoval, Ryan Vogelsong and George Kontos took a break from Spring Training to talk with MLB.com about their favorite San Francisco hot spots including Alcatraz.

All three visited the island last year.

Sandoval showed up in April with his brother Michael, Hector Sanchez and Gregor Blanco. "I've been on Alcatraz like seven times," said the 2012 World Series MVP. "I love the views of the city." Ironically, Panda and friends created a buzz in the same prison building where Venezuelan counterfeiter Luis Eduardo DeShelley served time.

Later that summer, all-star pitcher Ryan Vogelsong and key reliever George Kontos toured the Rock with their families. "I showed them around the cellhouse and took them up to the hospital, the chapel and the gun gallery," said Brian Christensen, a former employee and current owner of Brian's Comics.

"We were very fortunate," Kontos said of the private tour that walked them in the footsteps of Greek convicts James Poulos and Teddy Green.

"It's a very cool experience," said Vogelsong who shares his July 22nd birthday with still wanted ex-inmate Henry Harbison.

Vogelsong will start Monday's game then depart to play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

Sandoval left Friday to join Team Venezuela.

Kontos will remain in camp to solidify his role in the bullpen.
