Giants' Spring Training opens with many question marks

Looking to regain the pitching dominance that eluded them last year, one year after having won the World’s Championship for the second time in three years, the Giants have much to do about everything, including pitching for Spring Training 2014 that opens this week in Arizona.

It’s gut-check time for the Giants.

Last year, the once-proud and dominating starting pitching staff had one pitcher sporting an ERA under 3.00 in the person of Madison Bumgarner (2.77 13-9).

The rest of the staff notoriously underperformed with ERAs well over the competitively respectable 3.00 (Cain 4.00, Lincecum 4.37, Vogelsong 5.73 and now–departed Barry Zito 5.74).

On the horizon there’s hope. The Giants opened spring training camp this week with a fractured-ankle-recovering Tim Hudson chomping at the bit to get ready to help a pitching staff that needs a shot in the arm.

Admittedly, Hudson knows he’s not in the best of shape coming off such an injury but is confident he’ll be ready once the real games begin.

“I know there are things I need to make strides in as fear as my agility and conditioning, but I feel pretty close to where I want to be from a pitching standpoint,” Hudson said.

“When I’m on the mound I don’t think about it at all,” Hudson said.

Tim Lincecum, the two-time Cy Young Award winner, got a vote of confidence from the Giants with a new 2-year multi-million dollar contract knows he’ll have to step up to the plate after a disastrous 2013 with a 10-14 record and a 4.37 ERA.

The Giants open Arizona Spring Training games on February 26th against the Pirates.
