Currently, Miami, Florida, and surrounding areas are dealing with a somewhat unusual and terrifying creature: the giant African land snail. These creatures can grow up to 8 inches long – can you imagine tripping over one while walking to work? Ew!
Besides being gross, these creatures are dangerous. They carry a parasite known as Rat Lungworm. Isn’t that charming?
These snails carry both sperm and ova and can produce over 1,000 offspring a year. They also live almost a decade – and I don’t need to do the mail to tell you that’s a ton of these things.
If you thought a zombie apocalypse was bad, these guys are worse. They’ll actually eat your house down. That’s right – they enjoy eating stucco and plaster. But you have your underground, titanium bunker, right?
In case you don’t have a disaster plan that includes your house being eaten by giant snails, fear not. Currently the Florida Agriculture Department is training Labradors to hunt these guys down.
The snails give off a terrible odor, which people can smell, but Labs can smell better. After a few months of training, they are put to work. Currently three Labradors are being trained to seek these creatures out.
I’ve heard of Labs doing some pretty crazy things – but hunting for giant snails?
