One thing nobody expects to see at a high school wrestling match is for a giant light fixture to fall on top of one of the competitors. Shockingly, that's exactly what happened to Michael McCormish during the Madison Square Garden event for Madison High School this past weekend. Bob's Blitz shared the details on Jan. 21.
The incident happened about 55 seconds into Michael McCormish's match, which you can watch in the video at the bottom left-hand side of the page. Even folks who think they know what is coming will likely gasp as the giant light fixture falls right on top of the wrestler's head. He jumped back up and immediately got medical attention, and luckily he is okay.
McCormish later shared a photo of his injuries and tweeted, “Just letting everyone know I'm fine! Stitches in my head. Gash on forehead and back of me [sic] head and little cuts from the glass nothin serious.” Later he tweeted with someone who said the coach felt awful, and McCormish told her to pass along the message that he's fine and there's nothing anybody could have done.
The wrestler was quickly swarmed by media outlets and for a bit it looked like Michael McCormish would be flown out to New York for an interview. Instead, it seems he'll be doing some satellite interviews. Despite the scary incident, he seems to be taking it all in stride. Yahoo notes that the rest of that bout was called off, and nobody else was injured as the giant light fell on Michael McCormish.
