Ghostbusters returning to haunt theaters and with new blu-ray release

Realizing that Father Time is hitting you over the head with the ugly stick known as reality can be a traumatizing thing.

Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Dan Akroyd are the Ghostbusters. The classic comedy will hit theaters for a 30th anniversary celebration in August.

It gets worse when you mark milestones in life. That first kiss. That first legal beer. And asking: “Who you gonna call?”

In the summer of 1984, many of us still in the teens shouted along with Ray Parker Jr.’s theme song – Ghostbusters!!! Yes, Ghostbusters – one of the seminal silly comedies of the ‘’80s marks 30 years this summer and Columbia Studios is celebrating in a couple of ways, the studio announced Thursday (June 5th).

The first comes in the form of a theatrical re-release. There’s the big nugget. There are few things better than experiencing the words: “He slimed me” from Billy Murray’s Dr. Peter Venkman than on the big screen. It was just one of those unexpected, glorious moments in film comedy.

The theatrical run begins in 700 theaters nationwide on Aug. 29th (Labor Day Weekend), according to a Columbia press release. The film will be restored and remastered in 4K resolution. Here’s guessing it could end up being the top-grossing film of that time.

Ghostbusters is still one of our studio’s most beloved franchises,” said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Picture. “I was lucky enough to work on the release of the film on its first run, so it’s a real thrill for me to see that it’s still connecting with audiences everywhere. On the big screen or in home entertainment, this is a great movie to experience again and again.”

The release comes months after the death of Harold Ramis, who portrayed Egon. Ghostbusters 3, which according to reports will feature new actors, is still slated to begin film in 2015.

Several weeks later on Sept. 16, the studio will release a boxed set of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II (a 25th Anniversary Edition) which will include the remastered version along with all-new extras. It will be the first time that the sequel appears on blu-ray disc.

“To celebrate this milestone anniversary, we wanted to create something new and collectible for fans. These new Ghostbusters blu-rays will feature the highest quality presentation along with new content that reflects the rich history of this iconic franchise,” said Lexine Wong, senior executive vice president, worldwide marketing, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
