The Aronoff Center for the Arts will open there Fifth Third Broadway in Cincinnati 2013-14 series with Ghost the Musical on September 24 and continuing through October 6. 2013. This musical has already been seen been seen by over 1 million people worldwide. It is the recipient of five Olivier Awards and 3 Tony awards. There has been very enthusiastic reviews by major media outlets. Some of the reviews include, Newsday which said it is, “Unlike anything seen on stage before”, Associated Press said it was “Eye poppingly brilliant” and Variety, “A limitless array of dazzling effects”.
This musical performance is based the 1990 movie Ghost, which was nominated for Academy Award for Best Film of that Year. The film starred Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Tony Goldwyn and Whoopi Goldberg and was directed by Jerry Zucker. The musical will carry with it the highly dramatic themes that the movie had such as love conquers all, in life and in death as well as good over evil. The story is about young couple in love Sam and Molly. They are returning from a romantic night out on the town, and on the way back to their apartment they are mugged. Sam is killed and his body lays in dark alley with Molly crying over him. However Sam’s spirit was not at rest and he is unable to leave this world due to his great love for Molly and his belief that she is in danger. He communicates with a storefront psychic in hopes of saving Molly’s life and protecting her.
The musical is being directed by Tony Award winner Matthew Warchus known for successful hits of God of Carnage, The Norman Conquests, and Boeing-Boeing. Other creative members of the team that helped get Ghost the Musical to stage include Dave Steward of the Eurythimics, Glen Ballard known for his earlier creations on Michael Jackson’s Man In The Mirror as well as Alanis Morissette’s Jagged little pill. Bruce Joel Rubin who’s original screenplay was adapted to bring Ghost to the Stage. The musical will also feature “unchained melodies” by the Righteous Brothers.
Showtimes for this Broadway performance are Tuesday-Thursday at 7:30pm, Fridays 8:00pm, Saturdays the times are 2:00pm, and 8:00pm, Sunday performances are at 1pm and at 6:30pm.
