‘Ghost Mine’ cast members, Duck and Dick Secord, share reactions to show

When ‘Ghost Mine’, SyFy’s newest paranormal reality show, aired last week, the crew got the first look at the final cut of the show on TV, reports the Cottage Grove Sentinel on Jan. 23. Because the show, like other reality shows, was shot on location over a period of three months (June through August) cast members were not privy to which events would make it to air. So far, Duck and Dick Secord are pleased with what they’ve seen.

In the first episode, viewers saw Duck leave the team due to hearing the tommyknockers in the mine and assume that he gave up at the onset of the mining expedition. In reality, Duck told Cottage Grove Sentinel that he had been in the mine working for five or six weeks before he ‘tramped’- the mining term for walking out or quitting.

According to Duck, his reasons for leaving included have a woman in the mine, which is considered bad luck by miners, and the appearance of tommyknockers. Although the premiere episode attributes Duck’s concern over Tommyknockers to hearing knocking deep in the tunnels, that’s not what he says now.

“I’m working and all of sudden see a small stream of dirt coming down between the rocks,” Duck explained. “That’s the tommyknockers warning us.”

Duck and Dick Secord, the father and son team of the show, and their families recently watched the premiere of “Ghost Mine” and celebrated with family and friends at Dominos.

Although the Secords readily say some things happened that they can’t explain, they are not at liberty to discuss the paranormal findings or how much gold they uncovered.

“I am superstitious to some extent, but not overbearing,” Duck told the Cottage Grove Sentinel. “Watch it; if you don’t believe in ghosts, you might when you’re done. They have some pretty good stuff they captured, but it’s bad luck to have a woman in the tunnel, let alone a redhead.”

For now, viewers will have to watch the show to find out if the old Sumpter mine is haunted or the workings of overactive imaginations and superstitious miners.

“Ghost Mine” follows “Ghost Hunters” on Wednesday nights at 10/9c on the SyFy channel.
