Ghost Hunting 101: What is battery drain?

Whether you are new to paranormal investigations or have been a part of the community for many years, chances are you have heard of the term “battery drain.” Many of us seasoned investigators have experienced battery drain while conducting an investigation and gathering evidence. Some, may have only heard the term used, but never really had it happen to them first hand.

So what is “battery drain”? It is simply when a paranormal entity pulls the power from the batteries you are using in the equipment during an investigation. Sounds kind of obvious, doesn’t it. But let’s take a closer look at what truly causes battery drain.

Did you know that in the paranormal community it is believed that ghosts need an energy source to manifest, move objects, make noises and simply make their presence known. Many believe that when we, as investigators, go into an area, ghosts thrive on our electronic power sources. Thus, stealing the energy from batteries causing “battery drain.”

Treasure Coast Paranormal Examiner’s Personal Experience Note:
I have personally experienced battery drain on several occasions, but only my first encounter is the most memorable. I remember one of my visit to Gettysburg and stopping by the Devils Den area. I must have gone through four sets of batteries in my camera before I had to give up and move on. What happened as a result of the drain? Not much other than creepy feelings and a possible pat on the back, but no real evidence other than a lot of wasted batteries. Needless to say, I was bummed.

Battery drain is the number one reason you need to bring lots of extra batteries and equipment. You never know when a spirit will cause your equipment to stop working.

I also want you to note that just because your batteries drained while conducting an investigation, it does not mean you have proof of paranormal activity. There are many other factors which can be the cause of your battery drain, such as bad batch of batteries or equipment malfunction. So be careful before claiming you have proof of paranormal activity just because of battery drain. It can be added to you list of other gathered evidence, but not used alone.

Happy haunting!
