When I was beginning my ghost hunting adventures I had not idea what I needed to bring with me on paranormal investigations. You see on TV shows all this expensive and almost inaccessible equipment that they bring on a simple home investigation. Really?? Many of us who are just starting out cannot afford even one of those pieces of equipment, let alone an entire arsenal of technology.
So, what equipment do you really need when go on a paranormal investigation? Let’s take a look at some of the basic pieces of equipment.
Do not worry if you do not have it all. Start with one, master it and buy another piece of equipment when you can afford to.
Digital Camera
During an investigation you want to take as many photos of the haunted, or assumed to be haunted, location. Just because you do not see something or feel you have made contact with a spirit, does not mean the camera’s shutter needs to stop. Keep shooting and do not stop. You never know what will appear when it is time to review the evidence.
Digital Voice Recorder
A digital voice recorder is necessary if you want to capture EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) and have proof you hear ghosts during an investigation. I would have to say if you have only one piece of equipment with you, a digital voice recorder should be it.
Video Camera
Video cameras, especially ones with night vision, will help capture paranormal activity in action. This is a great tool to have with you, however if you are on a limited budget, it is not a necessity. If money does allow, try to use an infrared video or still camera which help improve your chances of capturing spirits.
EMF Detector
There are many different types of EMF detector devices you can use. This piece of equipment registers electromagnetic fields, which is believed to be produced when paranormal activity is occurring.
Thermometers
Thermometers, preferably digital ones, are great tools to have with you. This way you can document temperature changes in a room. Ghosts are believes to pull the heat/energy out of the air, which results in random cold spots.
Hope this list helps you get started on your first, or upcoming, paranormal investigations.
