Many newcomers to the paranormal investigation world have asked me, and other veterans, the same question: “How can I protect myself while investigating?” Unfortunately there is no one answer to this question. There are many dangers a paranormal investigator faces, including spiritual, demonic and physical. Dangers include everything from physical harm to psychological damage.
There are many different ways to protect yourself from physical dangers, including the number one rule in ghost hunting - never go alone. You will also want to wear long pants to protect your legs from getting scratched from rusty metal and old wood planks sticking out of the ground.
While planning an investigation I set up a time when I can take a tour during daylight hours of the area we will be investigating at night. This way I can photograph and document any potential dangers in the area before we go in blind.
There is no one way to protect yourself from things that go bump in the night. When conducting an investigation you never know what kind of forces you will be encountering and by communicating with them throughout the investigation opens the door for them to keep in contact with you. This is something you do not want to follow you home.
Everyone has different beliefs and ways to spiritually protect themselves from the spirit world. So whether you say a group protection prayer, wear protective religious symbols during the investigation or cast a protection spell, is all up to you and your team.
These little measures of protection will help keep you safe, but are not spook proof. So, now you ask “What can I do when spirits attack?” Because we cannot see 99 percent of the spirits, we have no idea when they are planning to attack. Attacks can come in a variety of forms, including being pushed, struck or tripped. This can be scary and startling, but it is the way many spirits are able to communicate with us. Just be prepared to put your arms in front of you before you fall on your face. Also, remember to not scream, yell or run out of the room when this happens. The ghosts don’t like that.
No one ever said that ghost hunting was an easy field to survive. However, if you are able to prepare and protect yourself from the spirit world, it is a fun and exciting adventure.
Happy Haunting!
