'Ghost boat's' bizarre 3 year journey from Nantucket to Spain

Just like something out of the movies, a ghost ship floated around in the Atlantic without a captain, crew or passengers for three years and made its way from Nantucket, Massachusetts to Spain!  The discovery of the boat surprised the owner, after the last time he saw “The Queen Bee” he and his passenger had been tossed off the deck and had to swim for shore, according to the International Business Times.

The 3,500 nautical mile journey of the abandoned “Nantucket ghost boat” is making a buzz online today. It was back in 2008 when Scott Douglas, 58, and his brother-in-law Rich St. Pierre were tossed from the deck of the boat into the depths of the ocean after being hit by an extra-large wave.  The two men could only watch as the boat was picked up and tossed about the swelling surf just off Nantucket Island in Mass.

The men swam to Esther Island and were later rescued by the coast guard, but they've always assumed that their boat was in the ship yard at the bottom of the ocean. On Tuesday when Douglas got a call from the US Coast Guard to inform him the boat was found and the location as to where it had washed ashore, he couldn’t believe it. While the “The Queen Bee” was rusty, covered with barnacles and a bit worn, it still stayed afloat.

International law has the Spanish Maritime Rescue Coordination Center as the new owners of this boat and that was fine with the previous owner. Douglas didn’t plan to go to Spain to claim it, saying that any personal belongings he had in the boat at the time are probably long –gone from the rough three year journey it took.

The boat’s name was clearly visible and even with all the wear it endured it still contained the radio, a first aid kit, fire extinguishers and maps of the US East Coast. Douglas, a grandfather of four, is interested in turning the story of the “Nantucket Ghost Boat” into a children’s book.
