Gettysburg Area Retail Merchants Association (GARMA) features First Fridays

Participating merchants proudly fly their First Friday banners.

Another month is upon us, and in Gettysburg, that means an upcoming “First Friday.” What is “First Friday” exactly? First Fridays are times when the Gettysburg Area Retail Merchants Association offer up great deals and specials, each first Friday evening of the month.

First Fridays generally take place January through November, roughly between the hours of 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. At this time, participating businesses offer up specials in the way of savings and sales for shoppers, diners, lodgers and towngoers. The specials vary each month, sometimes incorporating a theme.

Last month marked the first First Friday of 2014. On Jan.3, Sweeet!, the candy store located at 100 Baltimore Street was offering up new gummy candy items to sweeten up the new year. Adams County Winery, at 25 Chambersburg Street, presented their Warm up at “25C,” which included their delicious mulled wine for only $4 a glass (regularly priced at $5). Dunlap’s Family Restaurant and Bakery, located at 90 Buford Avenue, presented dinner entrees that were 20% off. During the 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Happy Hour at Gettysburg Eddie’s, all draft beers were $1 off, and all mixed drinks were $2 off. Appetizers were also $2 off. Other offers included T&S Clothing and Gifts offering a “Winter Warm Up Special” on clothing sales, Tommy’s Pizza’s “First Firkin Friday at Five” Happy Hour special, and One Lincoln’s coffee Happy Hour specials.

February’s First Friday will kickoff on Feb. 7, featuring these great merchants as well as many more. All are participating partners and members of the Gettysburg area Retail Merchants Association, and fly the banner advertising their participating deals in their windows.

The tradition for holding First Fridays, Gettysburg Style, has been ongoing now for eight years, with participating partnership growing annually. Though First Fridays date back eight years, the Gettysburg Area Retail Merchants Association, known as GARMA for short, can trace its roots back 50 years ago. As a non-profit corporation, GARMA’s mission is to help create, promote, advertise and represent the better business interest of the membership of the organizations involved. GARMA members make up a wide range of retail stores, shops, services, restaurants, financial institutions, attractions, accommodations and local media. There are currently well over 70 participating affiliates.

Aside from extending hours and promoting deals for the monthly First Friday event, the Gettysburg Area Retail Merchants Association also takes on many duties and responsibilities to foster growth, support and opportunities throughout the community. GARMA supports local interests and endorsement including those for holiday and seasonal events throughout the borough, publicity provision for community attractions and advertising and even serves as an insurance umbrella for co-sponsored events.
