I talked with Eric Durrance last Saturday when he was playing the after party at the Florida State University football game in Tallahassee, Florida. This is an area he knows well as he grew up there. He was gracious enough to find a quiet place where we could chat by phone. It is pretty evident that music is his life. There is an excitement in his voice when he talks about it along with an anticipation of what is to come. Eric has been in the business for awhile now. Three years ago he came off of a CMT tour with Jason Aldean and Lady Antebellum and soon after that his record label dissolved. At a crossroads, Eric decided to rebuild his career from scratch. Not an easy task but somehow he has accomplished just that. Eric’s current band, the Tobacco Rd Band (Eric Durrance, Lex Vance, Aaron Halford and Joe Markham), signed a record deal with newly formed Silvercreek Records. When asked why Silvercreek Records, he explained that he could be himself without fear of them trying to change him or his music. He has written many great songs including co-writing “Eight Second Ride” with Jake Owen, a big hit for his friend. Country influences in his music come from his childhood and time spent with his grandparents. They listened to Conway Twitty, Hank Williams and Merle Haggard to name a few. He was also influenced by pop music. That is what makes his music so diverse. Eric says his music isn’t traditional country, but country with a rock edge.
Eric’s wedding anniversary is in a few days and I asked him how he balanced career in Nashville and home life in Florida. He said when he’s off, he’s off. The cell phone goes off and he concentrates on his family. As for the fans, they are the reason the band writes and performs. He says “It’s all about the fans”. Eric is a songwriter first and a performer second. He hopes the band's music will somehow touch the lives of those that listen.
Here is some of the their music. Take a listen and enjoy.
Their latest single is “That’s Country” featuring Colt Ford.
This song has a thought provoking message “The World Is Crying Tonight”
You can check out the band this weekend in Nashville. The Silvercreek launch party will take place at Honky Tonk Central on Saturday, September 21, from 9:00 pm.-midnight. The Tobacco Rd Band will perform from 10:00pm -11:00pm.
