Getting started with running

Spring is officially here, the weather is getting warmer, and there has never been a better time to begin an exercise regimen. Running is a great workout to start with; it is one of the best exercises for weight loss because it burns more calories per minute than most other workouts. It can be done anywhere, with other people and hardly any equipment is required.

Before beginning you should invest in a quality pair of running shoes. Initially it’s a good idea to shop at a store that specializes in running shoes and get fitted there. Later on when you learn what brands of shoes work, you can pick them up at most sporting goods stores.

It’s very important to start slow, especially if you’ve never run before. Begin with a measured, one-mile run every other day. Stretch out before and after and make sure your body is properly fueled for a workout. When one mile seems comfortable, gradually increase your mileage, adding 10% of your distance each week. If you’re having a hard time, don’t feel pressured to run the whole way. Incorporating intervals of walking can make your runs less intimidating and make it easier to increase your distance.

If you approach running in a safe, gradual way it can be an exhilarating, inexpensive exercise you can do alongside other people, in every season.
