Getting pampered at Walt Disney World: Senses Spa at the Grand Floridian (Photos)

When you think of Walt Disney World, rides and shows are probably the first things that come to mind. Pampering might not be one of your first thoughts unless you're familiar with the Senses Spa at the Grand Floridian. If so, you know it's an oasis of relaxation in the midst of a busy vacation. If not, you might want to try it out next time you're at Disney.

I had the chance to sample one of the Senses Spa treatments. It was hard to choose, since the menu includes everything from manicures and facials to body wraps. Massages are a spa standard, but I have them fairly regularly so I wanted to go with something a little different. I was almost swayed by the body scrubs, but I opted for a citrus. Between age and the Florida sun, my poor skin takes a beating. I figured it could use some rejuvenation.

The spa is located near the wedding pavilion. When you check in, you'll get a quick tour of the facilities. Not only do you get your treatment, but you also get use of the steam room, whirlpool, and (best of all) the heated loungers during your visit. Look for hidden Mickey's in the mural as you bask on them.

Your experience starts off with a specially formulated juice, based on the theme of your treatment. Mine was Renew, which includes a tasty pomegranate blend. Then I slipped my things in my locker, donned a cushy robe, and relaxed in a recline in the waiting area until it was facial time.

The only problem with the citrus facial is that it will make you hungry as the scent of all the delicious problems seeps its way into your nostrils. Products include grapefruit, pineapple, and strawberry rhubarb, and you can feel your skin sucking them in as it gets soft and hydrated. Meanwhile, my hands luxuriated in paraffin.

You get a bit of the massage experience, too, on your head and shoulders. Overall, it's a wonderful sensory experience that puts you in a state of bliss. It lasts 50 minutes, but the time flies by. I wasn't ready to leave yet, so I hit the whirlpool for a quick soak, followed by a heated lounger, before I tore myself away. Of course, I grabbed one of the healthy cupcakes (yes, those two words go together at Walt Disney World) on the way out. Chocolate banana...mmmm!
