Here's a few final observations and thoughts from the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup.
First things first, we're going to have to shorten that name. I know the LPGA wants to give credit where credit is due but I think Founders Cup, give or take an LPGA preceding it, will do just fine.
After watching a lot of short game situations during the tournament, it seems that the ladies lack a bit of creativity in their short games. They just don't seem to have a variety of shots. It seems that every shot around the green has to be some sort of low running chip with a sand wedge. Karrie Webb is the only who seems to have a medley of shots around the green.
The LPGA still appears to be struggling to attract a fair quantity of media. At 3:00 PM on Sunday only fifteen spots were taken in the media center. So, if there were more than fifteen bylines, someone was on their couch at home phoning it in based on the television coverage.
The official week-long attendance was 33,000 for the five day period of March 16-20. PR people tell us that Saturday had the largest crowds. It's interesting how crowd-volume perception works. Having been there and seen all the folks, one would guess that the attendance would have been more. However, it was obvious a large portion of the gallery stayed around the clubhouse area and did not venture onto the golf course. If you decided to lace up your walking shoes, it was easy to get a front row seat for any group you wanted to follow.
