Getting fired up over flu shots for pregnant women

Fearful that getting a flu shot would endanger her chances of going full-term with her pregnancy, 29-year old nurse Dreonna Breton found her job at Horizons Healthcare Services in Lancaster, PA was terminated instead after she refused the mandatory injection.

Breton, who has an 18-month-old son, has already suffered three miscarriages, and while her doctor and her midwife submitted letters supporting her decision, staring that although they believed the vaccine to be safe, “her health would be damaged because of the anxiety it would cause,” the company did not consider the argument to be valid enough to grant her a medical exemption.

The CDC currently encourages all pregnant women to be vaccinated due to the increased risk of complications associated with contracting the flu while with child, emphasizing that “the flu vaccination is safe and will protect the mother, the unborn child, and will also help protect newborns during the first months after birth.”

In the meantime, the Florida Department of Health in Lafayette County has announced that their state’s Medicaid program will cover the cost of influenza vaccination for all pregnant women through March 31, 2014.

“The flu vaccine is the single best way to prevent flu and it is very important for pregnant women to receive the flu shot,” stated DOH-Lafayette Asministrator Pamela Blackmon“We want to make sure that people are aware of this new opportunity for pregnant women to receive flu vaccination through Medicaid reimbursement.”
