Getting back to basics

Try to remember the day or the period in your life when you realized that you fell in love with your spouse or when he or she fell in love with you. What was going on in that era or period of time? What things mattered to you both? What things weren’t so important?

As time goes by and as each individual grows, things change. Wants, needs, goals and aspirations change. Frames of minds change along with changes of paths.

With all this changing, we tend to forget stick to the basics when it comes to giving and receiving love from our spouses. In case anyone hasn’t noticed, with the use of new technology, more demanding jobs, the troubled economy, among other things, we need each other more than ever.  Somewhere along the way we forgot how to court each other.  Most importantly, we forgot how to show love towards one another.

Back when you fell in love, things were much simpler. You got a kick out of simply going out for an ice cream cone or a picnic in the park. Now couples are trying to fit each other into their hectic daily schedules or neglecting each other all together.

Re-realizing that little things mean a lot will help couples re-discover what really matters when it comes to love and marriage.  Practicing some of the tips below can help the two of you get back to each other.

  • A smile will go a long way.
  • Avoid negativity as much as possible, try something positive instead.
  • It may seem silly, but leaving notes in your spouse’s lunch or pocket as opposed to an email just can make his or her gloomy day seem much brighter.
  • Fix your spouse’s favorite dish.
  • Ask your spouse what is on his or her mind and actually listen to what he or she is saying.
  • Make date night mandatory, but keep it simple (remember spending time with your spouse doesn’t have anything to do with money).
  • Do something spontaneous.
  • Touch is magical. Show your spouse non-sexual affection.
  • Learn the art of kissing.
  • Look longingly in your spouse’s eyes when they least expect it.
  • Try an unselfish act, without expecting anything in return.
  • Hire a babysitter.
  • Take a trip to a local hotel or bed and breakfast.
  • Compliment your spouse.
  • Do a crossword puzzle together.
  • Listen to music in silence together.

These seem like simple things, but they can make a world of difference in your relationship and spark new fires.

Below are some resources to help with the rekindling of your relationship.
