New York transplants (such as I) love delis, especially the Italian variety. And now, thanks to the opening of Appetito Cal-Italian Bar & Eatery we can have our olives, Pecorino, bruschetta, pastas, paninis and all those tasty dishes we miss so much.
Housed in an attractive, contemporary-style building with stylish interior design, the casually-chic eatery has indoor and outdoor seating in booths or tables. You can order food and beverages (wine, beer and soft drinks) and have it delivered to your table, or be served, your choice.
The food is fresh and delicious. On a recent visit we tried several dishes such as a creative Tuscan kale Caesar salad that was perfect and healthy. We also enjoyed a faro-lentil salad with English peas, asparagus and Shiitake mushrooms (yummy) and a ricotta gnocchi with kale pesto, walnuts and lemon that was oh so delicious. Another favorite as the eggplant parmigiano that was cooked nice and soft and tasted authentic.
There are many more items on the menu as well as delicious desserts like house-made gelato, tiramisu profiteroles and of course coffees, draft beer, wine and even cocktails.
Located across the street from the trendy Ace Hotel at 1700 South El Camino Real, Appetito is a real treat for local denizens. The owners are banking on the deli becoming a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists and it looks they are on the right track. The also expect to serve the young, hip and happening guests from the nearby Ace Hotel who may want a change of pace (but the food at the Ace is pretty darn good).
The deli's open daily from 11 a.m., call 760-327-1929, bring a good appetite.
