ABOUT THIS TIME two years ago, I wrote a pair of columns highlighting haunted hotels around the world (see links to the articles below). This year I thought I’d give you the scoop on a scary stay right here in Atlanta. Check it out—if you dare.
The building that houses the Beverly Hills Inn, on Sheridan Drive just east of Peachtree, began life in 1929 as an apartment building for elderly widows. Three of those former residents supposedly still reside there, even though they’ve long since passed and the building is now a bed and breakfast (it was, in fact, the city’s first B&B). The ladies take the form of floating orbs and cloud-like fogs and creep out guests with whispers both menacing (“Get out!”) and grandmotherly (“Make it happy”) and occasionally smashing the drinking glasses of those who dare speak ill of the dearly departed.
Back in 2007, a team of local ghost hunters—armed with static-emitting black lights, digital voice recorders, camcorders, and an EMF detection meter—investigated the inn and concluded that, yes, the site “exhibits evidence of paranormal activity in the form of intelligent human spirits.” The third floor, particularly Room 33, is said to see the most otherworldly action. It’s enough to make you wonder just who it was that left that chocolate on your pillow!
