Easter comes late this year, April 20, which means the same can be said for Ash Wednesday, which kicks off the Lenten season. And that means that Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, is still nearly two weeks off, on March 4.
That said, it should be noted that Northern Californians need not wait that long to get their laissez bon temps rouller on. There are three tasty Mardi Gras events on the schedule for next week.
Sunday: St. Mark’s Church in Richmond is throwing its annual Mardi Gras bash featuring the music of Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic.
February 28: Mill Valley’s Sweetwater Music Hall hosts the 23rd annual Mardi Gras Mambofest. The evening’s lineup includes Rhythmtown-Jive, Zydeco Flames and special guest Rahni Raines.
February 28: Gator Nation and the Pulsators headline the festivities at the Hopmonk Tavern in Novato.
As for March 4,the place to be is the Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center in Berkeley, site of the Fat Tuesday Cajun/Zydeco Dance. The evening opens with Cajun/Zydeco dance lessons courtesy of Diana Castillo. As for the bands: “Steeped in Louisiana and New Orleans zydeco and swamp blues, Tri Tip Trio comes with a vision and nearly a generation of its members playing together in other groups. The Aux Cajunals play tunes from the Cajun Creole."
