Itsy Bitsy Fighter, Lois Blow, Olive Spankins, Allagasher....  There are a few of my favorite Maine rollergirl names.  Maine Roller Derby is looking for some fresh blood!

The league, which is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, is the first and only in Maine, so if you're a lady who wants to get her skate on, this is where you need to be.

Open tryouts are coming up in May and women of all shapes, sizes, fitness levels, and experience are encouraged to come if interested.  In the meantime, you are welcome to watch a practice, talk to members, or check out a public skate at Rollerworld or Happy Wheels.

If you want to see a bout, the next one is April 25th at the Portland Expo with the Port Authorities taking on the Harrisburg team.

Roller derby is serious business that requires a lot of practice and dedication, but the fitness benefits are well worth it.  Skating burns tons of calories, and the interval nature of bouts is an excellent cardiovascular workout.

It's not for the faint of heart, but it's also not as violent as it may first appear.  There are strict rules and unnecessary roughness is penalized, so don't be scared - if you're curious, give it a try!
