Get your fishing gear ready, Pennsylvania's 2013 trout season opens in April

If trout fishing is on your agenda in the coming months, consider using the following list as an efficient means to an enjoyable time along the stream.

1. Fishing license. The 2013 cost for an annual Pennsylvania resident license is $22.70 and a trout stamp is an additional $9.70. Remember that even if you’re practicing catch and release, you must have a trout stamp if you’re fishing in trout approved waters. 2. Rod and reel. Consider purchasing a combination unit at a local sporting goods store. Many rod and reel combinations are pre-strung with fishing line which saves anglers both time and money.
3. Tackle box. Most modern tackle boxes include a series of plastic containers with adjustable inserts designed for housing various sized lures. Find a box that fits your budget and ensure the zippers, snaps and box latches are fully functional prior to making the purchase.
4. Bait. Many anglers find synthetic baits like Berkley Power Bait, an effective means of filling their creels. Sanitary and easy to handle, synthetic baits are available in a variety of colors, shapes and scents.
5. Hooks. Considering that trout have small mouths, utilize hooks that are small enough to be consumed yet large enough to effectively hold the bait. Utilize your sporting goods store personnel for specific recommendations.
6. Bobbers. Bobbers serve 2 purposes. First, they suspend bait off the bottom of the creek, making it more noticeable to fish. Secondly, when a fish takes the bait, the bobber bounces on the water’s surface which indicates a fish is on the line. For trout, purchase bobbers that are no larger than a golf ball.
7. Hand sanitizer and a towel. Spending time along the shore increases the odds that you're going to get dirty and having sanitizer and a towel makes for quick clean up when you do. It's important to understand that the alcohol in the hand sanitizer is believed to repel fish, so prior to touching baits, be sure to wash off in the water.
