Michigan State University won the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2014.

According to USA Today, Before every football game this season, Michigan State president Lou Anna Simon would exchange text messages with Spartans coach Mark Dantonio and offer encouragement to the team. After the Spartans' final game this season – a 24-20 victory against Stanford in the 100th Rose Bowl, Simon held a rose in one hand and quarterback Connor Cook's helmet in the other.

"Connor forgot it, so I picked it up for him," Simon said with a laugh while standing on the field. "I'm being a useful president."

Simon was one of more than 50,000 Michigan State fans at the Rose Bowl, a trip she said she fully expected to make one day with Dantonio and his staff leading the way. "We've always traveled well, even in bowls not as prestigious as this one, because people care about their university and want to support Mark and the program," she said read the entire USA Today article
