On March 6th, 2012, the weather in Denver was so incredibly nice that one couldn't help but consider dusting off the ol' bicycle and heading out for a ride. Chances are, by March 7th the city will again be buried under snow. But one thought remains: spring is coming and so is the kickoff of the cycling season. It's pretty likely that your bike hasn't moved much since the temperatures dropped, and it may need some TLC before it is primed for commuting this summer. After all, one of the most discouraging things about the warm weather is having to ride a bike that isn't tuned properly.
Fortunately, Denver has numerous bike shops that are gearing up for the start of spring. Invest a few bucks in your bike (and yourself, and your resulting freedom from the gas pump) at one of these downtown repair shops.
Edgeworks/ The Bike Doctor (860 Broadway, Denver) - By winter: skis and snowboards. Summer time, though, brings a full-service bike shop with very reasonable rates. The Bike Doctor will also rent bikes for the day for those looking to tour about Denver from a different angle.
Denver Bicycle Cafe (1308 E 17th Parkway, Denver) - Not only is the Denver Bicycle Cafe a fully functioning bicycle repair and tune-up shop, but it also features a full coffee bar, a rotating selection of excellent beer on tap, and a few choice selections of snacks. However, the bike mechanics are not always around. Call ahead and schedule a time to bring your bike in. While you're waiting, drink down a mug of your favorite vice and soak in the Uptown neighborhood.
Chocolate Spokes (2805 Downing Street, Denver) - Bike building. Bike repair. Chocolate.
Salvagetti 1611 Platte St., Denver- With their iconic mural reading "We [heart] [bicycles]" in the Platte River neighborhood, this shop is located near some excellent cycling trails. However, they can be pretty popular with the bike-enthusiast crowd. Be sure to call ahead to see what their schedule looks like. This month Salvagetti has also opened The Salvagetti Annex in the South Broadway/ Baker district for quick tune ups and repairs.
REI Store (1416 Platte St., Denver) - This monolith to the outdoor life also does bike repairs and tunings.
Turin Bicycle (700 Lincoln St, Denver) - Located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, Turin will tune you up. Be sure to check out their full retail store as well.
