Since 1912, The Park School of Baltimore has been guided by the philosophy that, “The pupils were to learn because they were interested, because they loved their work, because they loved the school, because they were inspired by the highest type of teacher, because they saw the reason of things."
While at first blush, these may seem like lofty ideals, once you get to know the girls and boys in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 at the school located on 100 acres in Brooklandville, you will see why Park has earned a reputation for academic excellence and innovation. To know Park is to experience Park, so be sure to click on the links below to see why students are motivated to learn.
· Walk into an Upper School math classroom and observe students working with original texts written by Park teachers. These books introduce students to the way mathematicians think, question, and reason. They guide students to become better problem solvers by encouraging and honoring creativity and conjecture, two important concepts missing from most high school texts.
· Hear 2008 Newbery Medalist and Lower School librarian, Laura Amy Schlitz enchant children with her stories. Her award-winning book, Good Masters! Sweet Ladies!, a series of monologues, was originally written for Laura’s fifth grade students to perform as part of their year-long study of the medieval period.
· Watch middle schoolers work as a team, combining physical activity, personal discipline, and problem solving as they tackle Park’s Appalachian Challenge course, a nationally recognized outdoor education program. The course takes full advantage of the woods, pond, and stream on Park’s campus and is an integral part of the curriculum. A fundamental element of the program is that each challenge is entirely designed, constructed, maintained, and taught by students.
· Listen to the student jazz ensemble rehearse for a performance.
· Admire the skill of aspiring artists as they paint, sculpt, and carve.
· Travel with young citizens to East Baltimore to tutor children and adults at the Esperanza Center or work on Park’s 12th Habitat for Humanity house, for which they have raised over $1 million.
· Taste fresh produce from the campus gardens or sweeten your tea with honey from the Park School hives.
· Join the cheering crowds at a Bruins game – there are 54 teams to choose from. (Park’s high school athletes have been recognized with local honors and are recruited to play on collegiate teams.)
· Understand why for 98 years, The Park School has invested significant effort and resources in recruiting and retaining superior teachers – its most important resource.
