Get tied up in "Fifty Shades of Grey" trailer

The first trailer for Universal Pictures and Focus Features upcoming “Fifty Shades of Grey” debuted on NBC’s “The Today Show” on July 24. Well, part of it did. Deemed ‘too hot for TV,’ the full trailer clocks in at well over two minutes.

The trailer begins with Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) preparing to interview billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), but quickly turns into something a little more complicated. As those familiar with the book know, Grey prefers to replace romance with something more aligned with his ‘singular’ tastes. Steele wants to be ‘enlightened,’ at which point the trailer descends into a montage of steamy (but still green-band) S&M. All of this is accompanied by the exclusive version of Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love” that was recorded for the film.

“Fifty Shades of Grey,” which features Eloise Mumford, Luke Grimes, and Marcia Gay Harden alongside Johnson and Dornan, is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. Taylor-Johnson previously directed the 2009 John Lennon biopic, “Nowhere Boy.” Kelly Marcel penned the screenplay, adapted from the E.L. James novel, having previously scripted 2013’s “Saving Mr. Banks.”

“Grey,” which began as a bondage-centric “Twilight” fan fiction story, is now one of the best selling British novels of all time. All bets are off for what happens when the adaptation reaches cinemas.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” hits theaters February 13, 2015, with the studios surely counting on date night and girls night out audiences flocking to see it on Valentine’s Day weekend.
