Cassandra Shore Raqs Toledo this weekend!!

The legendary Cassandra Shore will be instructing and performing on Saturday, March 2 and on Sunday, March 3 at The Grand Plaza Hotel, 444 N. Summit Street in Toledo, Ohio 43604. Leyla and Raq the Casbah present this special weekend.

Since 1974, Cassandra has been studying and performing Egyptian Raks Sharqi and Middle Eastern folkloric dances. In San Francisco, she studied with the legendary Jamila Salimpour and since 1980 has been to the Middle East on research trips. Her career as a Cabaret performer continued until 2010.

In 1989 she founded the Jawaahir Dance Company, “dedicated to bringing the rich folkloric heritage of the Middle East to the theater stage as a living art form.” She is currently serving as Artistic Director and Choreographer for the dance company. She is a past recipient of the Minnesota Dance Alliance/McKnight Foundation Resident Choreographer’s Award as well as the MDA/Jerome Foundation Sponsor Pool and Dancer Pool Awards. She taught Arabic women’s dances as adjunct faculty through University College at the University of Minnesota for 15 years. She teaches and performs worldwide.

Saturday’s Class #1 (10am-12pm) will be on “Technique & Combinations.” Cassandra will begin with warm ups and proceed to technique, new moves, combinations and footwork. Then, finger cymbals will be added and you will be moving to a live drummer.

Class #2 (1:30pm-3:30pm) will “Focus on Saidi.” This course will focus on Saidi rhythm, classic movements and technique specific to Southern, Upper Egypt. No cane required.

On Sunday, Class #1 (11am-12:30pm) will focus on “Classic American Cabaret Veil.” Intricate veil wraps and tucks, unwraps and unwinds , tricks and discards.

Class #2 (1:30pm-3pm) on Sunday will cover “The Big Finish.” You will learn how to end your performance with combinations, traveling steps and trick to leave your audience wanting more.

A catered lunch provided by Mano’s Greek Restaurant will be available for $10 both days.

On Saturday evening, the cabaret show, Cirque autour du Monde, will feature talent in music, song and dance from around the world. Dancers are from Greece, Asia, Russia, Senegal, etc. Leyla nd Raq the Casbah will be your tour guides! The show will be reminiscent of a circus midway at a 1900’s World’s Fair. Performers include ALMA Drum and dance, The Chinese Association Performance Troupe, Lapis Lazuli and many others. Two cash bars will be available. Tickets for the show are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
