Get the look: How to wear florals winter 2012

There is one tiny drawback to all this talk about spring fashion—it makes you long to wear it now.  Suddenly your fur vest isn’t so fabulous and your cocoon coat is less-than-appealing.  You want vibrant color, sunshine and warmth.  And anyone who has spent a winter or two in Huntsville will tell you that, California dreaming on such a winter’s day is all you’ll be doing.  Still, there are ways to work those early spring obsessions into a winter wardrobe on the chilliest days.

This year florals are a little bit brighter and a lot bolder than seasons past, which makes them perfect for year round wear.  Not delicate by any means, these are pieces that hold their own next to the dark knits and bold hues of your winter wardrobe and with a few simple styling tricks can be part of a cozy ensemble.

A floral tee in a bold tropical print is ready to brighten the gloomiest day.  Paired with sleek complements like a dark blazer, classic slim fit black pants and booties it needs no other adornment.

Bold, bright, floral pants in a poppy print might be intimidating, particularly if they are fitted, but style them with an oversized sweater in black for balance.  Keep the hue tonal, but interesting when you finish with black wedge booties and a shiny black necklace.

The most likely candidate in most collections is a floral dress.  Classically styled with a chunky cardigan and boots particularly for a rainy day, it’s spot on. For something different, layer a fitted sweater on top and belt it, creating the look of a skirt with the warmth of an extra layer. Add tights and boots.  Be sure to keep a few inches between the hem of the skirt and the top of the boot and don’t forget your sweater tights.
