Flu season already? Well, not quite but according to KPTV - Portland's own Fox 12 News, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has already identified 3 potential strains for the 2011-2012 influenza season as:
- A/California/7/09 (H1N1)-like virus (pandemic(H1N1) 2009 influenza virus)
- A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus
- B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus
In addition, multiple brand name skin-deleivery vaccines were available as of May 2011 to adults ages 18-64. Refer to KPTV-Portland for more information.
Meanwhile, not much publicity has been given to some of the more holistic means of preventing or lessening the infectiousness of influenza. One holistic treatment to consider is the use of essential oils which can replace many harmful over-the-counter drugs used in our homes daily.
Recently, essential oils have been making their way into mainstream medical settings and are being well-received. One such product, OnGuard, a therapeutic essential oil blend by doTerra, has shown great promise in it's ability to support a healthy immune system and has gotten the attention of the medical community. The US Library of National Medicine (PubMed) published the results of a study entitled, Protective essential oil attenuates influenza viral infection: an in vitro study in MDCK cells, done to determine OnGuard's afeectiveness at decreasing the infection (or spread) of influenza!
When choosing oils for health benefits, it is important to select certified pure therapeutic grade (CPTG) essential oils. Unlike fragrance oils which just smell good, essential oils have a healing component that actually interacts with the body chemistry. Do your research and go with a reputable company. And remember that cheaper is not always better. The good news is that pure essential oils are highly concentrated so a little goes a lonnnng way!
