Congratulations, you now have a new most anticipated album of 2014, and it's coming out in just a few short weeks.
The Wonder Years' frontman and lyrical tour-de-force, Dan Campbell up-and-announced his new solo outfit, Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties, and their concept-driven album, We Don't Have Each Other, which drops on July 8 via Hopeless Records and was produced by Ace Enders (The Early November / I Can Make A Mess).
For his new project, the singer is straying from his signature non-fiction, realist-core punk rock and wandering into more traditional folk rock territory. Campbell says that, for the record, he drew heavy inspiration from the likes of The Mountain Goats, The Weakerthans, Bright Eyes, and few others.
I worked to channel the aforementioned artists as well as The New Amsterdams, Bright Eyes, Lucero and more to create a dynamic record that finds its stride somewhere between the alt-country and Americana that I grew up with, and the punk and emo that’s become my home.
With the new sound comes the fictional character Aaron West, whose story takes place in, you guessed it, the 20's.
Everything I had ever written lyrically up to this point had been non-fiction. I wanted to push myself to get those same emotions out of a character piece, to make a piece of fiction feel just as raw and personal as songs about my life, and so I created a man named Aaron and I set out to truly understand him. I wanted to know where his parents were from and what God he grew up knowing. I wanted to know what football team breaks his heart every December and if he has it in him to give up smoking. I wanted to know how he got here. I wanted to know how he handled tragedy.
Although a full tour, pre-orders, and song premiere are undoubtedly in the works, for now we have only an introduction video to go on. Check out the video above, a full press release here, and in the meantime you can catch Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties on a string of 2014 Warped Tour dates, where Campbell will perform as part of the Acoustic Basement.
