September is National Yoga Month and is the perfect time for the curious to learn more about yoga. According to the 2008 study in the Yoga Journal, yoga is practiced by an estimate of 15.8 million Americans. A growing trend, it has been shown to promote health benefits. There are many types of yoga that provide benefits for the mind, body and spirit.
Some eastern yoga practices are primarily meditative and may encourage the practitioner to seek enlightenment. In the west, Hatha yoga is most widely practiced and revolves around physical poses (asanas). Breathing is important and is a basic element of all types of yoga. Some common yoga breaths are full complete breath, victorious breath, cooling breath and bee breath. Each breath is designed to bring healing to various parts of the body as well as mental clarity and focus to the mind.
