Are you looking for something fun to do with the family this weekend? Grab your scarf and mittens and head to Niles for some ice cream and chili. From the Niles Frigid 5K to the 7th annual Chili Cook-off Cjili crawl the whoe family will enjoy the Hunter Ice Festival. A Niles tradition since the 1980's the event has grown to include ice sculpters from all over the United States, a 5K race, pancake breakfasts, and various family activities. Chemical Bank will be open as a warming station. Dream Coach Carriages to provide free sleigh rides to the first 75 people to pick up a coupon at one of their Niles branches (of Chemical Bank): 407 Main St branch or 1835 S. 11th St. Coupons will be given out on a first come, first serve basis. Bundle up the kids, get a group together or come out on your own.

There is something for everyone at the annual Hunter Ice Festival in downtown Niles, MI. This year, Zingerman’s of Ann Arbor, MI will be making our Hunter Ice Cream especially for this festival using an ice cream formula, circa 1900, from obtained from Penn State University. $1 per scoop. The Ice Ice Cream booth is located on the 100 block on South Side of Main Street. Hunter Ice Cream ‘every bite, a delight’ Along with harvesting ice from Barron Lake, the Hunter Company also made Ice Cream. Hunter Ice Cream was noted for its purity and in 1914 the company could produce 400-500 gallons per day, any flavor, and the ice cream could be molded into various shapes. Photo Contest: Submissions will be accepted from the beginning of the festival until two weeks after the festival closes. No submissions will be accepted after January 31, 2014. Only photos from the current Hunter Ice Festival will be accepted for judging. Winners will be notified in February.
