Music, lunch, free coffee, and cold water await plungers ready for the 18th Annual Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge this Saturday, March 8, 2014. Of prime importance to plungers is the forecast of milder weather, in the 50's, for the plunge. The original date for this event was January 25th which was postponed for the first time in 17 years because of ice, high waves, and low temperatures. Tomorrow's temperature will be at least 20 degrees warmer than the original date, however water temperatures will be in the 30's.
If you registered and haven't picked up your sweatshirt it will be available at the registration desk at Sandy Point Park State Park. If you haven't registered and have decided to take a dip in the cold waters of the Chesapeake Bay you are in luck. Participants can still register tomorrow and pick up a sweatshirt to show the world you are a plunger. As a bonus for those disappointed with the cancellation of the original date, the first 2500 plungers who register on Saturday will receive a commemorative "I PLUNGED ON!" t-shirt, according to the MSP Official Site.
Vendors will be on hand with prizes and giveaways throughout the day. To be eligible for the giveaways participants will receive a "Giveaway" sheet at registration that needs to be checked at five stations around the reduced Plungefest. The event, sponsored by the Maryland State Police supports Special Olympics which provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic sports for those eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities.
Sandy Point State Park opens at 8:00 a.m. with plunging beginning at 11:00 a.m. with the Pee Wee & Family Plunge. Open plunges will begin at noon, and continue at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. A change from previous years is that the Polar Express shuttle will only be transporting passengers to Sandy Point State Park from the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium and Kent Island High School. If you already have a Polar pass for the park it will be honored, according to transportation and parking information on the official website.
