The first thing you need to do to get ready to date again is to feel good about yourself. The real connection with someone is beyond the physical but let’s face it, the packaging needs to be up to par if you are going to get started. Even if you are in a long-term relationship or marriage, everyone needs an update from time to time. Hey, cars get tune-ups, right? Here are a few tips on how to feel good about yourself and get back in the game. Or at least get a jump start on the new year.
Get to the gym
Start out by toning up! Get a gym membership. There are so many great places to work out. And we all could lose 5-10 lbs or at least tone up some problem areas! Fitcorp (www.fitcorp.com) claims it is the best gym in Boston. And Equinox (www.equinox.com) was voted best gym in America by Fitness Magazine. But a gym is something each individual has to check out and find what works best for them. If the gym scene doesn’t sound appealing, try yoga or tai chi. Start running again. Go out for a walk on your lunch break. Working out, as we all know, is good for the brain as it gets the endorphins going.
Get a new hairstyle
Get a new cut and color. Be bold and go red! Nothing makes a person feel worse than a bad hair day. And a new style goes a long way to give a person a newly found confidence. Boston Magazine rated Salon Mario Russo as the Best of Boston in 2010. Many of the local newscasters have their hair styled by that salon and they look really good. So splurge and try a new look.
Get a stylist or a style
Buy a few fashion magazines and get shopping. Give it a few weeks at the gym and shopping will become a whole new experience. The mirror in the changing room may be a bit kinder. If you are on a budget, go to TJ Maxx or Marshalls. But if you are not, go to J. Jill and talk with their stylist. Or go to Nordstrom and get their help. The salespeople there are eager to help and they certainly have style. So get inspired and get glammed up. Nothing says “I am bummed about myself” more than wearing sweats and T-shirts everywhere.
Get a manicure and pedicure
Nothing is uglier than unkempt nails and feet. Well, a bad attitude is but that's a subject for another day. People notice hands in particular. You can hide your feet in a pair of Doc Martens and we hope some people will choose that option but your hands need to be groomed. However, don’t ever say, “I am getting a mani-pedi.” That is a ridiculous sounding abbreviation that should not be uttered by anyone. Sorry, but it’s true and some things need to be said. It is one of those expressions that make you totally undateable even with beautiful nails. Try Miniluxe at 296 Newbury St. The website has a menu of services and they welcome walk-ins. Yes, they use the term “mani/pedi” on the site but what’s a girl to do?
So spend some time and energy on your appearance and head into a new year with confidence and the hope of a new relationship or the rekindling of an old one. Enjoy and Happy New Year! Until next time…….
