It's that time again—all national park sites will waive entrance fees during National Park Week, April 16-24, 2011. Most of the 394 National Park Service (NPS) sites are always free to the public. However, for the more than 100 parks that normally charge for entrance, fees range up to $25 per vehicle. Free entrance means significant savings.
All winter long, lots of national park fans have been longing for spring and planning day trips, weekend getaways and longer vacations. National Park Week offers the perfect opportunity to get out and explore the natural beauty and learn about the history of these fantastic sites that have been set aside for the enjoyment of the people and protected by the NPS.
During National Park Week, lots of special activities are available for children. April 23 has been designated as Junior Ranger Day. Before you head out to your favorite park, please check its website to learn about programs for kids.
When you arrive for your visit at the park site, be sure to pick up a park newspaper to find out about scheduled activities and much more. This is probably the single most important tip to ensure a successful and more enjoyable park visit. The newspaper has a map marked with parking lots and restroom locations. It also offers schedules, safety tips, bus routes if applicable and all sorts of other vital information so you can spend your time seeing the park instead of trying to figure out where you are and where you want to be.
