A common New Year's resolution is getting organized, and where better to start than the craft room? All those piles of paper, drawers full of stamps, bins of yarn, buckets of buttons...they seem to multiply on their own and can get out of hand pretty quickly. Every once in a while it's a good idea to purge unwanted items, narrowing your supply stash down and making it easier to manage. In today's economy, it can also be a much needed boost to the budget.
Begin by separating items into those that you definitely want to keep, those you can sell, and those you want to donate. When deciding if something is suitable for resale, consider the item's condition, age, and appeal. There are several options for selling new or gently used items.
ebay. If you are not familiar with selling on ebay, this page can be very helpful while getting started. Ebay is a good choice for reaching a lot of people, and it is easy to use. The downside can be the time consuming aspect of mailing out numerous packages and the fees paid to ebay.
craigslist. Especially good for larger items that are difficult or costly to mail, craiglist puts you in touch with local people. Ads are free and you deal directly with the buyer, usually completing the transaction at your home. Remember to only take cash as payment, you don't want to be dealing with a bad check.
Garage sales can also be a good way to unload unwanted items. However, they are a lot of work and you generally have to price things very low.
Chances are, you won't get rich cleaning out your closet, but you just might earn enough to buy more crafty stuff!
For donations, consider a local school or shelter. To have someone pick items up at your house, try listing them on freecycle. Freecycle is an excellent way to get rid of things you don't need or want without adding to our landfills.
