Grab your friends and walking shoes on Friday, March 15, 2013 and join local celebrities in the 3rd annual Moving against MS campaign. Since March is designated as MS Awareness Month, the Kentucky and S.E. Indiana Chapters of the National MS Society are hosting events around Louisville this week, March 11 to 17, to celebrate MS Awareness Week.
At the Bike/Walk-a-thon, participants will “get moving” by walking or cycling in thirty-minute increments to promote awareness to this debilitating neurological disease affecting over 5,000 people in our communities. In addition, hula hoops and jump ropes will be available to keep you moving and having fun. According to Mary Carabella, Development Manager for the Kentucky-Southeast Indiana Chapter, this free event will take place at Fourth Street Live from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and everyone is welcome to participate. Bikes and treadmills are provided by local fitness organizations. Proceeds from participating Fourth Street Live restaurants will be donated to the local Multiple Sclerosis Chapter.
For a unique, tasty experience, wake up early on Saturday morning, March 16 and head to Drinkswell on Story Avenue to construct your favorite Krispy Kreme creation. You and your team will come together at 9:30 a.m. and brainstorm to build a house, monument, castle or whatever you dream up; all made out of doughnuts! Teams of four are suggested, but not required. Each entry will be judged in the 3rd Annual Team Building Krispy Kreme Creation. Bring your family to this fun event, and enjoy free doughnuts too!
The Bike MS Training Kick Off Party for Bluegrass, Bikes and Bourbon will take place on Saturday, March 16. Beginning at Drinkswell, riders will cycle a 15-mile training ride around Louisville, followed by beer-battered pancakes, beer and prizes. Attendees will receive free registration for the annual Bike MS scheduled for June 22 and 23, 2013. All you need to do is show up, bike, eat and connect with others about Multiple Sclerosis.
MS Awareness Week joins people from all over to support a cause that chronically afflicts thousands of people each year. Nearly 5,000 people in Kentucky and Indiana and over 2 million worldwide have been diagnosed with MS. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society collaborates with health organizations around the world providing programs to help people with MS and their families. It funds research, facilitates education, and establishes ways to connect people across the globe to learn about MS.
Local chapters in fifty states host various events to bring awareness to this slowly progressive, crippling disease. Since the first Walk MS in Minneapolis 25 years ago, the event has grown to include 330,000 participants, fundraising over $50,000 each year. Walk MS 2013 will be on Saturday, May 18 in Louisville.
So this week, GET UP AND MOVE for those that can’t. Show your support and participate in a local event near you. Do your part to connect with others to fight Multiple Sclerosis.
