After the Thanksgiving holiday as we approach the Winter and the coming holidays, it is a great time to focus on motivation. To me the ulitmate motivator is the desire to enjoy the times we spend with family and or friends and to be able to make the most of them. I was told of the death of a man over this past holiday. He was only in his early 50's, and died from heart disease. Had he been a better caretaker of his body maybe he would still be here, and enjoying the days to come.
How about you? Being laid up with back pain, or unable to move freely due to other joint problems does not help when we want to really enjoy our special times. Being overweight and having the problems that go with this condition; like high blood pressure, breathing issues, and general discomfort all lead to making good times not as good as they could be.
I look forward to as many years of healthy living as I can possibly have. If it means not eating a slice of pie, or a helping of potatoes, isn't it worth that? There may be some illness or condition that cannot be addressed by diet and exercise alone, but maintaining yourself will contribute to better resistance to disease and overall health. I found time to work out twice over the long holiday weekend, and though I watched my food intake, I did not suffer from a lack of foods to eat!
Challenge yourself to make the most of every opportunity to enjoy life! Eating right does not have to be constraining, and you can always find great foods for any occassion. Foods that are healthful and nutritious while also tasting great.
Set a goal to move towards the physical condition you really want. If you need to lose weight, don't put it off by waiting until after the holidays, start now. A little step at a time will put you on the right track towards better days. You may be unable to walk, but you can move your legs or arms and get your heart rate up a little. Do whatever you can at you rlevel of fitness to start moving.
If you really want to improve your body condition, start with a goal to add a new exercise plan to your life, or modify the one that you now have to better reach your goals. This year my goal was to accomplish 20 wide arm pullups before my 62nd birthday. I made it shortly before the deadline and it felt great. The year befor that I made it a goal to get through a totally new and very intense exercise plan, P90X. I made it through three full rounds of this over the year to follow.
The largest crop of new fitness club members is always right after the New Year. You don't need to wait to make a resolution on Dec 31.
Make today the day you start fresh, and be here and healthy to enjoy all that there is for you in 2012 and beyond.
