Get Motivated!: Business seminar or spiritual revival?

The “Get Motivated!” tidal wave passed through Nashville yesterday, releasing a celebrity powered whirlwind, aimed at motivating attendees toward the ultimate goal ̶ success. Endeavoring to present the seminar in various cities across the country, organizers tout the event as a “celebration” of the “American Dream.” Indeed, the Bridgestone Arena seemed to come alive as notables such as Bill Cosby, Colin Powell, Rudolf Giuliani, Steve Forbes and many others, paraded across the stage one by one, offering winning strategies to succeed both personally and professionally.

Before moving into a ten minute seminar segment designed to offer spiritual secrets of success, attendees were made aware of religious aspects of the presentation, and they were given an opportunity to leave the area for its duration. Surprisingly, when given the option to either listen to a ten minute inspirational discussion underscoring the importance of “God” and spirituality (relevant to success) or leave the room, an astonishing number of those present chose the latter, and quickly rushed through the many exit doors.

Those who remained apparently received an extra dose of motivation, as evidenced by their sustained applause as they frequently interrupted the rousing speaker, as he spoke of hope and transformation. The segment ended with the audience offering a standing ovation. Who says business and religion don’t mix? Certainly, there are times when they should.
