When you take a dfferent route to work, it is amazing what you find. I was on my way to my day job early one morning, and I ended up discovering a museum on the way. The Indian Museum of Lake County, OH is located in The Technical Center’s Building B in Willoughby. If you blink, you will miss it. Its sign is very small and on a metal door with no windows. It is basically in the basement of Building B. Unlike some of the things we have in our own basements, this basement is truly awesome and a great place to learn something new.
The Indian Museum of Lake County is dedicated to American Indians who lived and/or still live in Northeastern Ohio as well as all across the country. Have you ever heard of the Whittlesey Culture? I found out who they were along with some of the tools and items they made, the food they hunted, etc when I visited this museum. They were a group of people who lived by the southern shores of Lake Erie from 900A.D until 1600A.D. The Adena People also lived in Northeastern Ohio and were hunters, gatherers, and fishermen. I did not know who they were either until I visited here. Who are the Hopewell and Archaic Indians? They are other Indian tribes who lived here too. However, the museum does not stop there. You will find artifacts from The Plains Indians, The Comanche, The Sioux, the Iroquois, and many other tribes. There are so many that I could not possibly name them all here. Plus, there is a research library and a gift shop where you can find out more for your school project, your own memory of this place; or just to learn more as time goes on. The only negative about this place is that you have to take a weird route to work or get lost to find it.
The Indian Museum of Lake County, OH is located on the corner of River and Center Streets in Willoughby. Their hours are Monday-Friday from 10:00am until 04:00pm and Saturday and Sunday from 1:00pm until 04:00pm. They are closed all major holiday weekends.
