Get involved, get answers, help yourself: NAMI walks this Saturday

Ever feel a little shaky? Unable to cope? Ready to panic? Well, join the human race: according to the National Institutes of Heath,

  • An estimated 22.1 percent of Americans ages 18 and older - about one in five (or over 44 million) adults - suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.
  • Many people suffer from more than one mental disorder at a given time. In particular, depressive illnesses tend to co-occur with substance abuse and anxiety disorders.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness centers around support, education and advocacy for those families suffering the challenges presented by an incredible range of diverse and quite common debillitations, from Autism and Eating Disorders to Post-Traumatic Stress and Major Depression, and all else, on ABQ’s west side. (Please refer to www.nami.org), www.nami.org/sites/NAMI-WestsideNM . Should you like to meet this group and assist the cause, here’s your opportunity:

"NAMIWalks – Changing Minds...One Step at a Time is a nation-wide event being held in 79 communities around the country in 2011. It is the largest anti-stigma effort in America. NAMIWalks raise public awareness about mental illness and allows individuals with mental illness and their families and friends, as well as the larger community, to gather for this special day on Saturday, May 14, 2011. NAMIWalks raise much needed funds that fuel our grassroots efforts while raising our visibility in the community in order to ensure that those who can benefit from NAMI services can find them when they are needed. This is our 8th Annual Walk in New Mexico and our only annual fundraiser. If you are planning to be a Team Captain and have not yet registered your Team, please do so as soon as possible so that we can get you all of the information that you will need to be successful. • DESIGN and order a special Team T-shirt that all your walkers can wear the day of the Walk. It is a great way for a team to stand out in the crowd the day of the Walk. • PLAN a special pre-Walk or a post-Walk barbecue, brunch, party or dinner to help celebrate the day and thank everyone for their support. • MAKE signs together for Walk Day! This creative activity can help bring your team closer together and show your spirit on Walk Day! • START a friendly competition with your team and get incentive prizes for those who reach certain goals. • RELAX and be proud of the important role you and your family and friends are playing in the fight for all those living with mental illness! Remember: 8888 Harper Drive NE, corner of Harper and Ventura. Parking available in Hoffmantown Church Parking Lot.
