Get healthy and shop local at San Antonio farmer's markets

The spring season is a great time to try some local produce and boost your menu.

San Antonio has a variety of farmer's markets across the city to choose from.

For example, the Hill Country Farmers Market has three locations in Helotes, Leon Springs and The Rim Shopping area. The locations and hours can be found on the link above and typically they are open on Saturday or Sunday mornings. The Rim location is outdoors near the parking lot across from the Santiko Palladium movie theater.

The types of foods available at the market include produce, pasta, bakery goods, fruits and nuts, plus eggs and plants and herbs. The variety could spark a new menu and give you some healthy choices. So support the local growers and farmers in our area.

One of the biggest farmer's markets in our area is at Pearl Farmers Market located at 312 Pearl Parkway in front of the historic brewhouse. It is open on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm.

The vendors include Rhew Orchards, Sol y Luna Baking company, Peeler Farms and Imagine Lavender Farms. So there is a large assortment of produce and plants and local meats, chicken and eggs.

The Pearl is bringing our culinary tastes into a community venue along with the cooking school nearby plus the shops and restaurants that make up the neighborhood. This is also a great location for a walk along the banks of the San Antonio River.

So take the time to explore what the local markets have to offer and make some healthy choices.
