You can get tickets to an upcoming San Diego Padres baseball game from the Vista, San Marcos, and La Mesa San Diego County Library branches when you check out 20 items at one time by June 30, 2014 reported the Union Tribune San Diego on June 19, 2014.

You get 2 tickets to a San Diego Padres game for every 20 items you check out at once at any of the three participating San Diego County Libraries. If you check out 40 items, you’ll get 4 tickets. Checking out 60 items? You’ll get 6 tickets and so forth.

Everything from books, movies, games, music cds, magazines, and eBooks qualify as an eligible item for check out, including renewals! But the offer is only good while tickets last and you must check out your items by June 30, 2014.

Named the “Checkout Challenge,” the Vista, San Marcos, and La Mesa San Diego County Libraries are in a race to see which county library branch can reach one million checkouts in a fiscal year. Although, there are 33 San Diego County Library branches, only three, Vista, San Marcos, and La Mesa, are participating in the Checkout Challenge.

If successful, one of the three libraries will be the first library in San Diego County and in the history of the San Diego County library system to reach one million checkouts in a single fiscal year. The San Diego Library’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30.

The Checkout Challenge started earlier this spring when five Vista library staff members volunteered to shave their hair into Mohawks if the Vista branch reached one million checkouts. Not to be outdone by the pledge, Jose Aponte, the director of the Vista library, also pledged his commitment to get a Mohawk if the Vista library was declared the winner. If the San Marcos library wins, the manager has pledged to dye her hair red, white, and blue reported the San Diego County News Center on June 20, 2014.

"The Checkout Challenge aims to raise awareness about the great resources we offer at San Diego County Library," Aponte told reporters. "Staff and customers alike are having a great time with the competition and we are honored that the San Diego Padres jumped in to support the effort with their donation of tickets."

As of Tuesday, June 24, 2014, the Vista branch had 960,693 checkouts. The San Marcos branch had 848,202, while the La Mesa branch had 804,071 checkouts. By Wednesday, June 25, 2014, the Vista branch has gotten closer to the goal of one million checkouts with a total of 964,000 items checked out. The winning library will receive a new collection of hundreds of DVDs and have a community party.

To support the Checkout Challenge, the San Diego Padres has graciously donated thousands of tickets to upcoming San Diego Padres home games. This is your chance to support one of the three participating libraries and get free Padres tickets.
