It's probably the most unusual item of standard equipment General Motors has ever offered and it isn't an engine, fancy wheels or even an audio system. In fact, it's nothing you can see, feel or hear. It's free car insurance.
General Motors is teaming up with MetLife Auto & Home in including a one-year insurance policy on any new 2010, 2011 or 2012 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac bought in Oregon or Washington now until September 6. GM says the auto insurance includes both liability and physical damage coverage and exceeds requirements in the two states.
GM says the offer will "streamline the car-buying experience" and of course, make car ownership less expensive and therefore, GM hopes, spur sales. Although the coverage is only for one year--though the vehicle owner "can seek to renew the insurance" at the end of the year--GM calls it a pilot program. In other words, if it works, GM can extend and expand the coverage.
Details of the General Motors standard car insurance policy include a feature that many auto insurance policies don't. If the new car is damaged beyond repair within the first year or first 15,000 miles, whichever comes first, MetLife Auto & Home will repair or replace the insured vehicle with a new vehicle, without prorating depreciation.
The policy will not be included on purchases or leases for "certain commercial or fleet purposes", and it's good only as long as the original purchaser continues to own or lease the vehicle. It covers anyone who drives the vehicle with permission.
