The Bangkok dining scene is a dynamic one, and there is always a proverbial “new kid on the block”. This time around it is Scalini which just opened in September 2013 in the newly launched Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok. Located on the second floor of the hotel, this trendy new Italian-American restaurant has a creative and playful New York City 1920-30’s prohibition era dining concept and a sumptuous venue that is tailor made for business and special occasion dining. The space is bold and dramatic with a contemporary feel accentuated by contrasting textures of silk, leather and metallic hues of silver and copper. The focal point is the interactive kitchen with wood burning pizza oven, and the centrally located wine cellar that doubles as a stylish yet unconventional room divider.
While dining at Scalini you can order from their tempting menu of salads, pastas, steaks and homemade pizza’s or you can order from Scalini's sister restaurant; Mondo, which is a tapas style venue on the lower level of the hotel. On my visit I ordered Selection of Cured Cold Cuts & Cheeses served with a trio of house-made jams (kiwi, mango and fig). It is an evocative mix of Gorgonzola, Asiago, Brie with black truffle, and a rare Parmesan cheese that is aged for 24 months. The cold cuts included a mild Bologna with pistachio nuts, spicy Salami, 28 month aged Prosciutto di Parma, and a homemade cured beef called Carne Salada. Other Tapas from Mondo worth ordering are the Mini Wagyu Burger w/Aioli Sambal, the Fried Calamari, the Black Cod Mantecato w/ Miso Dressing and Fried Whole Tempura Prawns. Another great starter is Scalini’s signature dish of Tuna & Salmon Tartar, Bitter Leaves, Lemon Aioli, Mango w/ Grilled Ciabatta which is refreshingly light and colorful. All the dishes are tailor made for sharing and are well matched with lovely Chianti by Classico Banfi which can be ordered by the glass or the bottle. For your main course I recommend the Roasted Mediterranean Sea-Bass, EVOO, Aglio Candito, Vongole Sauce, Saffron Emulsion & Pomodorini Ciligia. Beautifully composed, this is a delicate dish of perfectly cooked seafood with complementary elements of clams and sweet sundried tomatoes. Another favorite is the Oven Baked Black Cod Fillet, Caramelized White Asparagus, Sicilian Cous Cous, Black Mussels Sauce Prosecco Foam. This is a highly accomplished offering as it is a delicate interplay of complementary flavors and textures. For pasta go opt for the Paccheri, Duck Ragout Black Truffle & Tonino Pecorino, which is best described as comfort food on a plate. For dessert I recommend the light and refreshing Lemon Verbena Panna Cotta w/ Strawberry Preserves, Wild Berries & Rosé Sorbet or the Scalini Tiramisu w/ Espresso & Mascarpone Foam & Ferrero Rocher Ice Cream Flavored w/ Marsala. Open daily for lunch and dinner; Scalini is primed to be a successful addition to the Bangkok dining scene. They have all the key ingredients that it takes to make a restaurant successful and they offer great service, vibrant cuisine and a sophisticated contemporary venue
