Planet Earth: more than just a great TV series, the Earth is a great friend. Each year we celebrate that friend on Earth Day, April 22nd. This year the Earth Day Network is specifically challenging people and businesses around the world to commit to A Billion Acts of Green and there are plenty of things we Bostonians can do to contribute.
The number one pledge at this time is to eat more local food. You’ve probably run across a farmers' market here and there around this great state, but check out this site to know when and where you can find them reliably. Team that pledge up with the second most popular one—using reusable bags. Maybe one like this or this? Many Boston restaurants buy their food locally as well. Ask the next time you stop in your favorite shop around the corner with a friend.
Rounding out the top three pledges is the promise to raise Earth Day awareness. That’s another one that many of us can take on, if we haven’t already. Boston College had an on-campus celebration earlier this week and a Greenskate is organized for Saturday on Boston Common. On top of that the local colleges and universities held their own in this year’s Recyclemania competition with Boston College, Harvard and Brandeis ending up in various top fives.
While the Earth Day Network has already gotten millions of pledges, there’s millions more to go. Even if you just tell your friends, you’ve done something. But don’t stop there. Check out the site today and decide what you can do. Then you can go watch Planet Earth (with the David Attenborough narration) and feel good about it.
