Get Close to Some Majestic Birds at Cleveland Metroparks "Birds of Prey Weekend"

Soar over to Cleveland Metroparks "Birds of Prey Weekend" to discover magnificent and powerful birds on Saturday, February 4 and Sunday, February 5 at Rocky River Nature Center in Rocky River Reservation in North Olmsted.

Learn about the skill and precision of hawks, eagles, owls, and other birds of prey, and the important roles they play in nature. 

The free "Birds of Prey Weekend" features live animals, exhibits, presentations, crafts, hikes, puppet shows, and more on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., including:

Saturday, February 4 * 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Ice Carving Demonstration * 11 a.m. - noon

See master ice carver Dave Zajac turn blocks of ice into frozen birds of prey.

The Ancient Sport of Falconry * 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

Using raptors to hunt is called falconry.  Join licensed falconers Don Jessie, Al Harris and Naturalist Jeff Riebe to meet the birds and learn about this ancient sport.

"Hunters of the Air" Puppet Show * 1:30 - 2 p.m.

The Trailside Puppeteers present a fun and educational puppet show about the winged hunters of the air.

Hawks: Sun Loving Killers * 2 - 3 p.m.  

Join Dave Wolf of Lake Erie Nature & Science Center for a closer look at the life of hawks in Northeast Ohio.  There is nothing like seeing a live hawk to make anyone want to join a hawk fan club!

Owls: Hunters of the Night * 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Sunday, February 5 * 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Birds of Prey Hike * Noon - 1 p.m.

Join a naturalist for a hike in raptor country.  Bald eagles, peregrine falcons, red tailed hawks, and other daytime raptors have been nesting in the Rocky River Valley.  Bring binoculars and try to spot one of these elegant hunters, on a hike starting at South Mastick Picnic Area, located off Valley Parkway in Rocky River Reservation, south of Puritas Road/Mastick Road in Fairview Park.

Birds of Prey 101 * 2 - 3 p.m.

The Medina Raptor Center has many examples of birds of prey that they'll have on-hand.  What is the difference between hawks, owls, falcons, and eagles?  Bring the family to hear to hear about these fascinating predators.

Raptor Rehab * 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Laura Jordan from the Medina Raptor Center shows first hand what it takes to get an injured raptor back on its ...wings.
