Get busy baking with Bellaire bees' honey

May is just around the corner, and while you may be thinking of the end of the school year for your kids and family vacations, the work is just beginning for the Bellaire honey company.

Throughout the year, busy bees visit the flowers within a four-mile radius of the Bellaire Honey Company, bringing pollen back to their hives. Between May and October, the human workers at Bellaire Honey remove the honey from the hives and bottle it for selling. The honey is sold by the 12.5-ounce jar. You can get one jar for $7.50, 3 for $22 or a case of a dozen for $85. To learn more about Bellaire Honey Company or to place an order, visit bellairehoneycompany.com.

What do you do with honey?

While most people know that honey is ideal for sweetening tea to drink for a sore throat, there are many other uses for it. Try it drizzled on fresh fruit, spread on toast or stirred into lemonade. You can also try your hand at including it in your baking.

Substitute honey for sugar in baking. Honey and granulated sugar are technically two different types of sugar. Honey has a concentrated sweetness to it. For success with your baked goods using honey, follow these tips:

  • Reduce the amount of liquid in the recipe by ¼ cup for each full cup of honey you use.
  • Use ¾ cup of honey for every cup of sugar in a recipe.
  • Neutralize honey's natural acidity by adding ¼ teaspoon of baking soda for each 1 cup of honey but only if there is not baking soda listed in the baking ingredients.
  • Lower the baking temperature by 25 degrees Fahrenheit.
